Mozilla Thunderbird - Setup Tutorial

NOTE: Click here to view a printer-friendly version of this tutorial.

Configuring the Mozilla Thunderbird Email Client

This step by step tutorial walks you through configuration of your email account in the Mozilla Thunderbird email client for use with your DNI email account.

  1. Click "Tools"

After you have opened your Mozilla Thunderbird email client, begin by choosing the "Tools" dropdown menu.

  2. Click "Account Settings"

Next, click on the "Account Settings" menu item to view your Account Settings window.

  3. Click "Add Account"

You should see an Account Settings window like the one above. Click on the "Add Account" button.

NOTE: When the Account Settings window appears (see above), remove any unused accounts listed in the left-hand window. Remove the mail account for your DNI email address too, since this tutorial will walk you through the recreation of the mail account for your DNI email address. Unless you use Mozilla Thunderbird to check another email address, the list of mail accounts should be empty when you continue.

  4. Choose "Email account", then click "Next"

When the New Account Setup page appears, choose "Email account", then click "Next" to continue.

  5. Enter Your Name and Email Address, then click "Next"

Enter Your Name in the "Your Name" field exactly as you want it to appear to others. This is the name others will see each time they receive an email message from you.

Enter your email address in the "E-mail address" field. This is the email address others will see each time they receive an email message from you. Click "Next" to continue.

NOTE: If you setup any email aliases for your email address within your DNI control panel, you can enter your email address or any of your email aliases here. For example, if Jane Doe's last name had changed to Smith, she could simply create an email alias of "jsmith@example.com" for her address, and then enter this new email alias here so that other people would see her new "jsmith" email address.

  6. Choose POP server, type Incoming Server name, type Outgoing Server name, then click "Next"

Your incoming mail server will normally be a "POP" server. Your Incoming Server (POP) and your Outgoing Server (SMTP) names will normally be the same. Type "mail." followed by your domain name (everything after the "@" in your email address) in each field. Click "Next" to continue.

  7. Type Incoming User Name, then click "Next"

Type your Incoming User Name (this is your PRIMARY email address) in the "Incoming User Name" field. Click "Next" to continue.

NOTE: You should test your email address and password by logging into the DNI Webmail site. If you are unable to login to the DNI Webmail site, you are using the wrong email address or password.

  8. Review Account Name, then click "Next"

Review the Account Name that is automatically entered into the "Account Name" field, then click "Next" to continue.

  9. Review the account information, then click "Finish". You are NOT done!

Review the account information listed, then click "Finish" to close the Account Wizard. You must continue following the steps below to fine tune your account.

  10. Update "Server Settings"

Click "Server Settings" under the Account Name, then update the following server settings:

Enable the "Check for new messages every X minutes" option and set to "30" minutes. We do not recommend setting this to any less than 15-20 minutes.

Enable the "Leave messages on server" option. Be sure to enable the next option too, or your mailbox will fill up and bounce all of your new email. This option allows you access to your recent email through the DNI Webmail site since recent copies of your messages will be kept on the DNI servers.

Enable the "For at most X days" option and set to "7" days. Although we recommend 7 days, you could adjust this option. If you set this option too high (ie: 20 days), your mailbox may fill up and bounce all of your new email.

Enable the "Until I delete or move them from Inbox" option. When this option is enabled, any email you delete in Outlook Express will be deleted from the server. If you use DNI Webmail, you will not need to see messages you have already deleted in Outlook Express.

  11. Update Outgoing Server (SMTP) settings

Click "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" to view a list of outgoing mail servers. You should only see a single outgoing mail server. Click on this outgoing mail server, then click the "Edit" button to edit the SMTP server settings.

  12. Update "SMTP Server" settings, click "OK"

Update the following "SMTP Server" settings, then click "OK" to continue.

Change the "Port" from "25" to "8025". Most internet providers prevent their customers from sending mail on port 25. Changing this setting to 8025 allows you to bypass this common provider restriction.

Enable the "Use name and password" option and specify your PRIMARY email address as the "User Name" If this is not set correctly, you may be prompted for your account username and/or password each time you try to send email.

NOTE: If you do not enable this option, you will only be able to send email to other DNI customers. You will receive "relaying denied" (or similar) error messages when you try to send email to non-DNI customers.

  13. Confirm Account is Set as Default account, then click "OK". You are FINISHED!

Click on the Account Name in the left-hand window, then click "Set as Default" button (if available) to confirm that the account is set as the default account. Click "OK" to close the account settings window.
